Mary Miles Minter

Juliet Shelby
"The Littlest Rebel"

Many people are familiar with the story by Edward H. Peple, "The Littlest Rebel", about a Southern soldier reconciled with his Union brother through the efforts of his daughter Virgie. The story was made famous by the movie which starred Shirley Temple, as little Virgie Cary. Well, Mary Miles Minter did it first. Her most famed broadway role, Mary performed as little Virgie Cary, along no less distinquised actors as William and Dustin Farnum. It was sometime during the 1911 season that she acquired the name of Mary Miles Minter. Here are some of the earliest images you will find of Mary, at approximately 9 years old.

Extremely rare is the 1912 era theatre "Broadsheet" shown below. They were usually printed on cheap paper and early examples are difficult to come across. The portions of the broadsheet we've used on this page are slightly illegible, but if you look you will find "Juliet Shelby" listed in the credits!
