Melissa Stark, played by Mary Miles Minter, is cast as an upright young woman who often finds herself dispelling quarrels between members of the Allison and Watts familys, both clans of the Tennessee hills. One day she gets a visit from Mrs. Sanders, a wealthy woman who has offered some used possessions for the girl. Mr. Sanders, having tagged along, alledges that he recognizes Melissa's father, Jethro, as a wanted murderer and fugitive from the law.

While the sheriff, Sam Allison, is summoned to arrest Jethro Stark, Melissa enlists the Watts family to help, and the old family feud between the Allisons' and Watts' begins anew. Sadly, Jethro Stark is killed while trying to stop the conflict, having never known the allegations against him. His innocence is subsequently revealed, as the feuding familys finally reconcile their differences.
